Liverpool move to prevent Georginio Wijnaldum from repeating with Naby Keita

Liverpool move to prevent Georginio Wijnaldum from repeating with Naby Keita

Wijnaldum is free

In one of the strangest decisions of the transfer window, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum was allowed to leave Merseyside for free upon expiration of his contract.

The Dutchman, who was always present last season, had apparently become a vital cog in Jurgen Klopp’s team, but at 30, the club’s hierarchy saw him as replaceable. Later, Wijnaldum moved to Paris Saint Germain, when he began his summer spree.

Now Liverpool will be looking to avoid making the same mistake twice as the contract situation with Naby Keita heats up.

Keita’s season in Liverpool

By most judgments, Naby Keita’s career at Liverpool has been disappointing since his £ 54 million move from RB Leipzig to Liverpool.

The Guinean midfielder has made just 80 appearances for the club in 3 seasons, and made just 7 Premier League starts last season, with three additional appearances as a substitute. Far from what Reds fans expected when they poured so much on the energetic midfielder.

Still only 26, there is time for Keita to resurrect his Liverpool career, but with just two years remaining on his current contract in Merseyside, he reports from Italy. [via the Daily Mail] They suggest Liverpool are looking to extend their contract in the near future, if only to avoid a repeat of Wijnaldum.

Liverpool’s No. 8 could still have a prominent role in the first team this season, but with Thiago and Curtis Jones competing for the final spot in central midfield, he may have to settle for a supporting role once again.

As such, a new contract could symbolize little more than a wish that he not go on a free transfer, and Liverpool will perhaps admit a rare failure to transfer their mega-money man.
