David de Gea vs. Dean Henderson

Towards the end of the 2020-21 campaign, serious competition broke out between David de Gea and Dean Henderson for the acclaimed number one spot at Manchester United.

The English closer seized his chance when De Gea was left out for personal reasons, and went on to make 13 Premier League appearances, keeping 5 clean sheets in the process. Nevertheless. It was De Gea who found himself back between the posts for the ill-fated Europa League final against Villareal, finally seeing his penalty shot saved as the Spanish took home the trophy.

The addition of Tom Heaton this summer, signed as the third option, seemed to prepare Henderson and De Gea to battle once again for the top spot on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

However, it will be the Spaniard who will start in a goal against West Ham on Sunday, with Henderson named to the U23 squad to face Brighton and Hove Albion just 24 hours before the game.

Henderson is still recovering his physical form after an injury sustained at the end of last season that forced him to withdraw from the England team for Euro 2020, in a move that saw Aaron Ramsdale promoted.

There’s also a comeback for Phil Jones, as they both aim to get back in top shape.

It remains to be seen how the pair will rejoin the team when they are back in match condition, and how much playing time they will be given.

For now, De Gea looks like the one nailed to number 1.
