Jurgen Klopp explains Liverpool central half shakeup against AC Milan

Jurgen Klopp explains Virgil van Dijk's absence from Liverpool vs AC Milan

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Wednesday provided an explanation for his decision to bench Virgil van Dijk against AC Milan earlier this week.

Henderson makes a difference

The Reds, of course, kicked off their last European campaign on Tuesday night.

In a highly anticipated matchup between two of the continent’s most historic clubs, Klopp and company. He welcomed Milan to Anfield, for a Champions League Group B clash.

And, when all was said and done, the 90 minutes did not disappoint, heading for a 5-goal thriller.

It was Liverpool who finally emerged victorious, after recovering from a Rossoneri double lightning bolt on the edge of halftime.

After Mohamed Salah leveled things with just minutes into the second half, captain Jordan Henderson ensured that the 2019 champions had their quest to return to the top of the European game with the best possible start, courtesy of a good drive. from the edge of the zone:

‘I could have played’

On an otherwise positive night for Liverpool on Wednesday, the only obvious concern came on the defensive side of things.

While the Merseysiders forged a host of presentable opportunities over the course of 90 minutes, Milan’s pair of quick goals exposed the lack of stability at the heart of the hosts’ bottom line.

This came with Jurgen Klopp opting to turn things around, making use of the Joel Matip-Joe Gomez pairing for the first time this season.

Star cap Virgil van Dijk, on the other hand, was confined to the bench for the entire match, a decision on which the Liverpool manager relied for the first time this afternoon.

And Klopp went on to highlight recent central midfield injury issues at Anfield as key, ensuring that Van Dijk was indeed fit and available to present, if necessary:
