Ole Gunnar Solskjaer provides up-to-date information on Edinson Cavani’s fitness

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives an update on Edinson Cavani's physical condition before the West Ham clash

Manchester United mixed season opener

Domestically, Manchester United have started the campaign well, winning three of their first four games of the 2021-2022 Premier League season and drawing against Southampton.

The scoring team has already scored 11 goals, the most combined in the division, and sits atop the Premier League table by this metric, ahead of fellow rivals Chelsea. Having finished second last time and lost the Europa League final, this already felt like a decisive season for the club when it comes to trophies.

And that was before the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward, bought back for a second spell at the club, is a clear statement that trophies must be won this season. And while they are on the right track nationally, a surprising loss to the Young Boys has made qualifying for the Champions League more difficult than it should have been.

With tough games against Atalanta and Villareal, as well as the Young Boys game at Old Trafford, United will have to be in top form to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.

Solskjaer provides Cavani update

However, one man who has been conspicuously absent for the great start of the national campaign is Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan forward is recovering from a preseason injury and has yet to appear this season.

However, when asked about the chances of him playing this weekend, Solskjaer pointed to the Carabao Cup midweek tie, also against West Ham, as a more realistic comeback date, saying:

“We hope Edinson starts training with us after the weekend.”

Hopefully, maybe Monday. Maybe he’s involved on Wednesday because he had a fantastic season last season. “

With Ronaldo back leading the line, and young Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford also around, it remains to be seen how much playing time the 34-year-old will realistically get. However, he is still a fantastic and seasoned option from the bench.
