Why John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are missing for Manchester City against RB Leipzig

Why John Stones and Aymeric Laporte are missing for Manchester City against RB Leipzig

Manchester City kicks off the Champions League season

Manchester City are set to start their Champions League campaign for this season with a tough draw at home against RB Leipzig tonight.

The Citizens are coming off three straight wins, scoring 11 goals and not conceding in the process. Their opponents, by contrast, have gotten off to a torrid start to the Bundesliga season. Of their first four games, they have only won one and last time they were beaten 4-1 by Bayern Munich.

Unsurprisingly, Pep Guardiola has named a strong team for the tie, including a first start to the season for Kevin de Bruyne and the return of Phil Foden to the bench, both of whom will be welcome returns.

However, absentees increase.

Guardiola explains why Laporte and Stones are missing

Perhaps the biggest surprise was in the central defender, where Ruben Dias is joined by Nathan Ake, whose only start this season had been during the opening day loss to Tottenham, and has since been replaced by Aymeric Laporte.

However, Guardiola gave some insight into why Nathan Ake was starting today by explaining the reasoning behind the Stones and Laporte omission. In fact, he revealed that both had been injured in international service.

The Spaniard said:

“He’s [Stones] injured of the national team. The same as Laporte ”.

This will leave some fans scratching their heads given that Laporte played ninety minutes against Leicester just three days ago, but Ake will surely see this as another opportunity to stake a claim on the team.
