Solskjaer explains why he replaced Ronaldo & Fernandes vs Young Boys

Man United manager Solskjaer explains why he replaced Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes vs Young Boys

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has moved to explain the substitution decisions of Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo vs Young Boys.

Man United lose to Young Boys

Manchester United returned to Champions League action on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils would face a trip to Young Boys for possibly their easiest game of the 2021/22 Champions League group stage.

However, even though the Young Boys sport a weak side, they would actually steal a huge 2-1 win from United.

Cristiano Ronaldo, of course, would fire Man United to the lead after just 13 minutes on the day:

From here, however, Man United struggled to add a second and mustered just one more shot in the entire game, which came in the 25th.th minute.

United also saw Aaron Wan-Bissaka being shown a direct red card after 36 minutes, which would eventually lead to Young Boys fighting their way back into the game and scoring a 94.thWinning minute thanks to a bad back pass from Jesse Lingard.

Why Solskjaer replaced Bruno and Ronaldo

After the game, much of the talk has surrounded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his decisions after the red card.

Switching to a back-five during the middle of the game and taking out Jadon Sancho after 36 minutes did seem odd. But perhaps Solskjaer’s strangest decisions came in the form of replacing Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronald, especially when Paul Pogba remained on the field.

They are both clear match winners for United and could have provided that late-game piece of magic had they stayed.

However, Solskjaer has since explained why he replaced them, citing the couple’s physical condition and desire to experience Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard’s legs:

“The game had lasted seventy-odd minutes. They have both been running a lot on Saturday and today.

“Artificial grass takes its toll. We wanted the Nemanja experience and Jesse’s legs. “
