#OleOut trending as Manchester United fall to late defeat against Young Boys

The fall of Manchester United to shock defeat

This was supposed to be the beginning of something special. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo, coupled with the great additions of Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho this summer, was destined to usher in a new, trophy-winning era.

None of that was shown tonight. Faced with a packed youth squad, Manchester United fell in a last-minute 2-1 loss to their Swiss opponents, and were out of the game for much of the occasion.

The red card to Aaron Wan Bissaka in the 35th minute, of course, did not help, but the reaction from Manchester United, who adopted a siege mentality against a team they would hope to beat even with ten men, was worrying.

The bizarre changes, which included replacing Fred with Anthony Martial with three minutes remaining, and seemingly poor management of the game meant that no one could have any complaints when the Youngs Boys attacked an offside pass from Jesse Lingard, who subsequently scored.

#OleOut trends on social media following the result

After the final whistle, Manchester United fans took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the result and, more worryingly, with the manager:

Will Ole Gunnar Solskjaer be able to get a tune after the new additions, or will his head be on the chopping block tonight?
