Georginio Wijnaldum talks about why he left Liverpool

Georginio Wijnaldum has recently opened up about his decision to leave Liverpool for the summer.

Wijnaldum leaves Liverpool

Wijnaldum joined Liverpool in 2016, departing from Newcastle for a fee in the region of £ 24 million.

Dutch was often used in a more advanced role for magpies. However, under Jurgen Klopp, the 30-year-old took on a slightly deeper role.

In turn, alongside Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, ‘Gini’ formed a devastating trident in midfield that has proven to be absolutely essential to Liverpool’s success in recent seasons.

However, after his contract expired over the summer, Wijnaldum would leave Liverpool after five very successful years at the club.

The Dutchman has now been signed by French champions PSG on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum on why he left Liverpool

Now, on the back of his switch from PSG, Wijnaldum has provided insight into why he left Anfield.

With PSG assembling a super team over the summer and backed by very wealthy owners, some may have thought Wijnaldum left for more money or looking for a new challenge in a new league.

However, when he spoke recently, Wijnaldum seemed to imply that he left because he did not have the feeling that Liverpool wanted to retain him.

He also claimed that he had expressed a wish to stay in Liverpool:

“You follow your feeling. Several months ago I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to retain me.

“In these cases, we have to move forward.”
