Manchester United kicked off their 2021/22 Champions League campaign with a trip to Switzerland to face BSC Young Boys on Tuesday night. The Swiss team is the weakest team in Group F, pitting the Red Devils against Villareal, the team that beat them in the Europa League final on penalties last season, as well as against Italian Atalanta.

Therefore, a victory in Switzerland is expected and needed to start their Champions League career and as such such a strong team has been named as a traveler.

This roster includes new signings Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, along with youth prospects Anthony Elanga and goalkeeper Matej Kovar.

However, a big absentee is Edinson Cavani, who scored 17 goals for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team last season.

Why Cavani is lost

Speaking after the win over Newcastle, Ole revealed the reason behind Cavani’s absence, saying:

Edinson took a hit in training. Maybe he will [out for] a week or so, he’s still working to get completely in shape after that. “

This, of course, paves the way for the man who inherited his number 7 jersey to also inherit his starting position against the Young Boys, with Ronaldo fresh off a double on his return to Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial could also be chosen to lead the line, but unless there are fitness issues, it looks like Ronaldo will want to return to the biggest stage in world football and attempt to regain his Champions League mark with Manchester United.
