Solskjaer explains the absence of Edinson Cavani vs Newcastle

Why Edinson Cavani is not in the Man United squad to face Newcastle

The absence of Edinson Cavani from Manchester United’s call-up of the day to face Newcastle United on Saturday is explained shortly.

CR7 steals the headlines

Of course, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are currently in action at Old Trafford.

In their first outing at the back of the international break, the Red Devils host Steve Bruce’s Newcastle, aiming to overtake Tottenham at the top of the English top flight rankings.

And, as things stand in Manchester, the three points are precisely what United is heading for.

Almost as if written in the stars, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored in his second debut with the Reds, grabbing the headlines as only he can.

After Mason Greenwood led an effervescent effort into Newcastle’s goal on the edge of the break, Freddie Woodman spilled the ball in the path of the incoming Portuguese, who made no mistake from just a couple of yards:

Cavani is lost

Although Ronaldo’s name occupies a central place amid the ongoing action at Old Trafford, however, it was the absence of another United striker that actually attracted attention before the start of this afternoon.

The player in question? Edinson Cavani.

Having failed to set foot on the pitch so far in 2021/22 due to a late return from his summer break, hitman Cavani was expected, at the very least, to take his place on the bench against Newcastle.

His complete omission in the day, therefore, was quite a surprise.

However, as described above, an explanation has since been provided that the former Napoli player missed out once again today.

Speaking to the media at Old Trafford, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed that Cavani is ‘not yet ready’ to appear as he took a ‘hit’ in practice during the week:
