Protest poster flies over Old Trafford during Ronaldo’s second debut
Cristiano Ronaldo started his second spell at Manchester United this afternoon with a double in the Red Devils’ 4-1 thrashing of Newcastle at Old Trafford.
But his impressive outing for Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s troops came with a reminder that there are still many who will not remain silent following the sexual assault allegations that were leveled at the Portuguese icon’s direction.

The feminist group Level Up, who remain unconditionally in the corner of the accuser Kathryn Mayorga, he hoped the sign would “remind the crowd” of the woefully under-publicized case that has apparently been forgotten after Ronaldo secured his return to Manchester.
As such, a plane with the banner “#Believe Kathryn Mayorga” flew after the start of the game against Newcastle in a show of solidarity and unwavering support for Ms Mayorga, while the group’s co-director, Janey Starling, wanted to “send a message to football that rape accusations cannot be taken off the field. ” [quote via the BBC]
The facts behind the case
Note: The following is a detailed excerpt of the allegations and the resulting legal actions taken through the Manchester evening news.
Ronaldo is alleged to have raped an American woman, Kathryn Mayorga, during a vacation in Las Vegas in the summer of 2009, just weeks before his move from United to Real Madrid. An accusation he has always denied.
On June 12, 2009, Ronaldo met Mayorga at the now-closed Rain nightclub, and they were photographed by paparazzi that night.
Mayorga has alleged that she was invited to return to Ronaldo’s suite at the Palms Place Hotel, where the rape is alleged to have taken place. A day later, on June 13, 2009, Mayorga reported the alleged assault to the police, but chose not to reveal his name or the name of his alleged assailant, or where the incident occurred.
After hiring a lawyer, Mayorga initiated civil proceedings against Ronaldo, instead of pursuing the criminal charges.
As a result of the civil action, the legal teams representing the two parties met in Las Vegas for mediation in January 2010. Ronaldo was not present at the talks.
That mediation reportedly led Ronaldo to agree to pay $ 375,000 (£ 270,000) to the plaintiff as a settlement, although there was no suggestion that the settlement involved or accepted any wrongful conduct on the football star’s part. In return, Mayorga was unable to publicly discuss the accusation.
In 2018, a year after a German newspaper made the accusation against the player public, Ronaldo’s legal team accepted that the 2010 agreement existed, but reiterated that Ronaldo had not admitted his guilt.
“This agreement is in no way a guilty plea,” said a statement from his lawyers in 2018. “What happened was simply that Cristiano Ronaldo simply followed the advice of his advisers to put an end to the scandalous accusations that were being made. they did. precisely to avoid attempts, like the ones we are witnessing, to destroy a reputation built thanks to hard work, athletic ability and correct behavior ”.
Las Vegas police re-investigated the alleged ‘sexual assault’ in 2018 and in January 2019 they requested a DNA sample from the footballer, and six months later they concluded that Ronaldo would not face any criminal charges.
“Based on a review of the information presented at this time, the sexual assault allegations against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt,” said the Clark County District Attorney’s office. “Therefore, no charges will be brought.”
A spokesperson added: “She (Mayorga) refused to identify him or reveal where the crime occurred. As a result, the police were unable to follow investigation protocols for sexual assault cases or conduct any meaningful investigation.
“Without knowing the identity of the perpetrator or the location of the crime, detectives were unable to search and seize vital forensic evidence. In addition, the video evidence was lost, showing the interactions between the victim and the perpetrator before and after the alleged crime ”.
