Mateo Kovacic wins Lampard’s comparisons after the exhibition vs Villa

'8 has changed it': Mateo Kovacic earns club legend comparisons after dazzling display against Villa

The name of Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic has taken center stage online tonight, following a magnificent performance in the club’s meeting with Aston Villa.

Lukaku on target again

Thomas Tuchel’s men resumed their Premier League campaign recently, in a meeting with the Villans at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues headed into the proceedings in search of a return to the winning track, having seen their impeccable opening to the campaign come to an end in Liverpool last time.

And when all was said and done on Saturday, securing their final 3-point shot is precisely what Chelsea managed.

A hotly contested affair in West London, in which the visiting Villa seized more than a few presentable opportunities, eventually culminated in a 3-0 win for the hosts.

Romelu Lukaku opened the scoring for the game early on, clinging to a pass that split Mateo Kovacic’s defense, before confidently fitting in:

The unplayable Kovacic became a scorer shortly thereafter, capitalizing on Tyrone Mings’ terrible mistake in choosing the far corner in style:

And there was even time for Lukaku to add some sparkle to the scoreboard with a late Chelsea third, rounding out another good day for Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Are you Lampard in disguise?

In turn, on the back of the action coming to a close at Stamford Bridge, it has since been a bit of a surprise to see hitman Lukaku’s name steal the headlines on Saturday night.

However, it was another of Chelsea’s stars who won the Man of the Match award.

The player in question? Mateo Kovacic.

The Croat, often a divisive figure among fans, shone through the 90 minutes, sporting a level above his Villa counterparts in a frankly world-class display.

And, as outlined above, the Chelsea faithful have (gleefully) highlighted a change that has proven to be the key to Kovacic’s rebound in form: his jersey number.

The former Real Madrid player, heading into the new campaign, ditched his previous number 17 to don the iconic number 8 Pensioners jersey.

And his performance against Villa, in turn, has led to widespread comparisons between ‘Kova’ and, in the eyes of most, the 8 best in Chelsea history:
