Leeds United third kit leaked; What’s going on?

Another day, another kit release. In a world of football where merchandising and brand exposure are at the top of the list given the financial aspect of the game, Leeds United enters the fray with their third kit for the 2021-22 season of the Premier League leaked online.

And, as completely neutral in this dogfight, I feel compelled to ask what the hell Adidas was thinking.

Truth be told, we are now at the stage where manufacturers and suppliers have reached the end of the idea factory. Any Rolodex that someone in the Adidas HQ basement has to dust off to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again would be highly recommended.

Protein powder comes to mind when you look at this violet colored selection. While I am really a fan of the choice of navy blue for the writing and logo applications in the kit, I am still dumbfounded by the choice of the main color.

History and tradition from the window

There is something to be said for implementing new ideas, but this usually goes smoothly when there is a method to insanity.

Barcelona’s exclusive Champions League home kit that was also recently leaked online is a prime example of purposeful boldness. Taking tradition and fan feedback to create an idea that was fresh but still remained close to the club in question.

What Adidas has proposed for Leeds has no foundation in reality other than “whatever … whatever, I’ll do whatever I want.”

Purple has never been a color associated with Leeds at any point in the club’s history regarding their uniform choice. And while third kits can take creative license to some extent, the golden opportunity to help the club redefine its Premier League status after promotion while offering something that was innovative but clean ultimately fell through.

For some better options that could have been modernized or used for inspiration, SBNation He did a pretty solid job of collecting a few that deserve a mention. The third kit for the 1999-00 season would have been particularly excellent given the club’s achievement during that memorable campaign both at home and abroad, and some of the lovable characters that nearly led the club to the UEFA Cup final. .
