Jordan Pickford reveals where he has improved to rank No. 1 in England

Pickford almost expelled

After the summer of England’s men’s soccer team, which saw them concede just two goals in open play in the entire Euro 2020, dropping Pickford seems unthinkable.

The Everton goalkeeper impressed with some brilliant saves, most notably the lack of two Italian penalties on the EURO final penalty shoot-out.

However, early in the 2020-21 campaign, his position as number one of the Three Lions had been seriously threatened. Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope started between the sticks of Gareth Southgate’s team in all three friendlies in March, but was cruelly denied a chance to impress at the European Championship due to injury.

This left Pickford the obvious choice, even more so when Dean Henderson also retired from the team, leaving only the inexperienced pair of Sam Johnstone and Aaron Ramsdale as the other options the England manager could turn to.

And, as already mentioned, it did not disappoint.

Pickford highlights his decision making as the biggest improvement

Speaking after England’s last World Cup qualifying game, Pickford voiced his thoughts on where he has improved in the last year. Now 27, he said:

“I am getting older, I am maturing. I also have much more experience. Everything is a learning curve. It is about improving day by day and being constant.

“I think the most important thing is the decision making: make the right pass at the right time, if it’s a counter attack or if I need to get the stinger out of the game and give the guys a break.

“So for me, I think I’ve always felt like I’ve been good at distributing the ball, it’s doing it at the right time and taking care of the guys because realistically if I have the ball in my hands, I’m in charge of the ball and I need to manage the game, so I think that is what I have improved the most ”.

With current progress, he appears to be England’s No.1 for the next big tournament (taking place in 12 months) and perhaps even the Euro2024 championship.
