Prediction of the winners of the Champions League 2021/22.

Chelsea and Liverpool among the contenders: predicting the 2021/22 Champions League winner

The Champions League is back

The Champions League is scheduled to return to our screens next week.

The first game of encounters takes place on Tuesday 14th September, with Sevilla vs. RB Salzburg and Young Boys vs. Manchester United kicking off the action at 5:45 pm UK time.

Both United and Young Boys have been drawn into Group F along with Atalanta and Villarreal.

In addition to the Premier League, reigning champions Chelsea will face Juventus, Zenit and Malmo in a group they should have little trouble qualifying for.

Meanwhile, Manchester City and Liverpool have pretty tough groups on paper. City must face PSG, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, while Liverpool face Atlético de Madrid, AC Milan and FC Porto.

The full draw for the group stage can be seen below:

Who will win the Champions League?

But who will win the Champions League this time?

The Premier League’s dominance over European football has increased in recent years. They have had at least one team representing them in the last four finals, with 2020/21 and 2018/19 where English affairs were played.

And, given that FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have declined a bit of late, it’s hard to see Spain doing well in this season’s competition.

Italy also doesn’t seem poised for a strong showing in Europe’s most coveted club competition.

The quality of Juventus has declined and, after losing Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United, he is not expected to get very far.

The champion Inter Milan, meanwhile, has separated from Antonio Conte and Romelu Lukaku. But even with that duo, he still struggled to mount some kind of serious challenge in the CL last time.

The contenders

This, on paper, should leave the English, French and German sides with the best chance of securing silverware.

The Premier League looks to have the most serious potential rivals for the Champions League in 2021/22.

Manchester City reached the 2020/21 final with Pep Guardiola finally choosing to constantly cut and switch sides for knockout matches.

Instead, the Spaniard was left with a false nine system that largely saw Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan occupying the five most advanced positions.

Of course, Pep changed things slightly in the final, opting not to start either Fernandinho or Rodri.

But with the same team plus the Jack Grealish edit, the Sky Blues should once again make it to the later stages this period as well.

However, without the services of a suitable number 9, the City’s ability to win the competition is reduced.

Liverpool should also be among the favorites this year after recovering from their injury crisis.

Jurgen Klopp has an excellent record in competition with the Reds and they have one of the best starting eleven in Europe. But it can be argued that Liverpool’s overall squad is not good enough, especially their forward reinforcements.

So unless Liverpool sign a big-name attacker in January, it’s hard to see him win it.

The last English team among the favorites to win the Champions League is Chelsea.

Thomas Tuchel has already shown that he can lead most of these players to the final. And, with the Londoner’s excellent roster now reinforced by Saul Niguez and Romelu Lukaku, another final appearance seems highly likely.

Outside of the aforementioned PL teams, Bayern Munich is one of the most likely to reach the final stages of the Champions League this season.

Julian Nagelsmann took over the club for the summer and brought with him two very impressive players: Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer.

The pair support an already remarkable team that includes some of the best and most experienced players in Europe, such as Robert Lewandowski, Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer.

The winner

All of the above teams have some of the best talent and some of the best coaches in world football right now.

However, it is simply too difficult to look beyond PSG as the favorite for the 2021/22 Champions League.

A forward four from Lionel Messi, Neymar, Kylian Mbappé and Angel di Maria is possibly the deadliest attack in football.

The PSG squad has also been bolstered over the summer by Euro 2020 winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, Champions League and Premier winner Georginio Wijnaldum, Serie A winner Achraf Hakimi and of course , the serial winner, Sergio Ramos.

So if Mauricio Pochettino can keep those players in shape, there’s really no reason PSG shouldn’t be in the Champions League final this season.
