Liverpool dealt another blow as Harvey Ellliot retires from international service

Elliot retires from Young Lions

Liverpool have received more injury news as up-and-coming star Harvey Elliot has retired from the England Under-21 squad after reporting for duty. He, along with Tottenham’s Ryan Sessegnon, will not be available for the game against Kosovo on Tuesday.

According to a Official statement:

Liverpool player Elliott appeared for international service with an injury sustained during his team’s recent draw against Chelsea. After further evaluation, it was decided that the 18-year-old is unlikely to play a role in the game at Milton Keynes, so he has returned to his club.

Elliot enjoyed a good season on loan at Blackburn Rovers last time out, and he’s started the season well for the Reds, appearing in all three of his Premier League games, including two as a starter. He has operated more in central midfield than the wide spot he took at Ewood Park.

Liverpool’s options are slim on the ground

Elliot’s injury, which surely leaves him in doubt heading into the next league game against Leeds United and perhaps the Champions League tie against AC Milan, will be a serious blow to Jurgen Klopp.

Takumi Minamino retired from Japan’s international service two days ago due to injury, while Roberto Firmino is also out with a hamstring injury.

Klopp’s team sold Xherdan Shaqiri to Lyon in the summer, leaving his currently slim forward options on the ground, something Elliot’s injury doesn’t help with.

With the season barely a month away, and Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane set to leave for the African Cup of Nations halfway through, will they ever regret not signing an additional striker?
