Why West Ham didn't belatedly push Man United's Jesse Lingard in the summer window

Lingard impresses with West Ham

Jesse Lingard enjoyed a rebirth of his career in the second half of 2020/21.

The 28-year-old primarily fought for any sort of regular action with Manchester United during the first half of the 2020/21 campaign.

He made just three appearances for the Red Devils, all of which came in cup competitions.

As a result, it was not a huge surprise when United allowed Lingard to leave Old Trafford on loan during the winter window.

What was surprising, however, was how impressive the midfielder looked for West Ham.

In 16 league outings for David Moyes’ team, Lingard scored nine goals and five assists, playing a key role in the Hammers who secured a place in the Europa League for the 2021/22 season.

Why West Ham didn’t push for Lingard

After such an impressive loan season, West Ham fans were no doubt hoping to see Lingard return next term with a permanent deal.

Especially once Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Man United, leaving Lingard competing with Edinson Cavani, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Jadon Sancho, Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba and the aforementioned Ronaldo for a place in the top four of the United.

Despite all this competition and his previous struggles at United, Lingard would remain at Old Trafford for the summer, while West Ham strengthened its ranks in offensive midfield with Nikola Vlasic.

And now, an explanation as to why West Ham did not make a late push for Lingard has been provided by 90min, who report that:

West Ham United did not make a late push for Jesse Lingard in the transfer window after the player made it clear to the club that he did not want to return to London Stadium.

Lingard is said to have communicated this decision personally to co-chair David Sullivan.
