An explanation was provided on Saturday for midfielder Curtis Jones’ absence from Liverpool’s squad for the Champions League.

Milan test awaits

Of course, Jurgen Klopp’s men are ready to launch their latest European endeavors in just under two weeks.

In their first Champions League outing of the campaign, the Reds will welcome Serie A giants AC Milan to Anfield for a highly anticipated clash between two of the most historic clubs in world football.

Liverpool had a completely difficult group to navigate in last month’s draw, with the Merseysiders set to compete with all the Rossoneri, Spain’s champion Atlético de Madrid and their family rivals FC Porto.

In turn, before European football officially returned to Anfield on September 15, coach Klopp was forced this weekend to decide his final Champions League roster.

Elliott enters / Jones leaves

And, this afternoon, the list of Liverpool bosses was officially presented to UEFA.

The club’s CL team turned out largely as expected, with star performers Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho, Mo Salah and more all included.

However, one omission that initially may have come as a surprise to the Reds faithful was the talented midfield Curtis Jones.

English youth international Jones has long been seen as one of the best promising players in the red half of Merseyside and despite his tender years, he played a significant role in shaping Liverpool’s first team in 2021/22.

So why wasn’t he named to the club’s latest team roster?

Well, because it didn’t have to be. As revealed by The Liverpool Echo, according to official UEFA regulations, ‘any player under the age of 21 who qualifies as’ local’ does not need to be registered as part of the maximum team of 25 players for the tournament and may instead be included in list B ‘.

Therefore, Jones, along with his star colleague Neco Williams, will simply be registered on Liverpool’s B list, guaranteeing their eligibility for this season’s Champions League campaign.

Harvey Elliott, on the other hand, has been part of the A list of the giants of the Premier League, due to his status as a non-youth player.
