How many jerseys does Manchester United need to sell to pay for Ronaldo's transfer?

Ronaldo rejoins Manchester United

In one of the biggest stories of the transfer window, Cristiano Ronaldo rejoined Manchester United, a deal officially confirmed on the day of the deadline.

In a shocking turn of events, Ronaldo was at one point ready to join Manchester City, before United plummeted at the eleventh hour to bring the club legend back to Old Trafford, reportedly paying a fee of 15 million euros with the possibility of a new one. 8 million euros in accessories.

To make things even better for the soccer romantic, Edinson Cavani agreed to give up the number 7 jersey to allow Ronaldo to return to his CR7 brand.

As a result, there were long lines outside the official store, with fans lining up to represent their iconic player and his iconic number once again.

Can United benefit from the transfer?

With large transfers of icons like Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the transfers are often said to be the ones that clubs can profit from through the sale of jerseys and image rights.

But how many shirts do you have to sell for this to happen? Soccer finance expert Kieran Maguire took to Twitter to explain, using Ronaldo as an example.

He revealed that:

United gets 7% on a £ 60 shirt, which works out to £ 4.20 per unit. Ronaldo’s cost is a transfer fee of £ 12 million (minimum) plus a salary of £ 20 million a year. Total cost £ 52 million over 2 years. The club would have to sell an additional 12.4 million jerseys to pay for its hiring.

By context, in the 2018/19 season, Manchester United presumably sold 3.25 million t-shirts, which if used as a benchmark suggests a maximum of around 7 million t-shirt sales in Ronaldo’s 2-year contract.

In short, it seems unlikely that the transfer will “pay for itself” in the sale of T-shirts.
