“For each name I can explain the reasons” Edu Gaspar comments on his vision of the Arsenal summer

Arsenal’s great summer

Arsenal signed six players this summer, culminating in a deadline day for Takehiro Tomiyasu, as they looked to revise their squad on the back of the eighth spots in a row.

Beyond Tomiyasu, the Gunners added Aaron Ramsdale (goalkeeper), Nuno Tavares (left back), Sambi Lokonga (midfielder), Ben White (center back), while Martin Odegaard rejoined the club from Real Madrid.

But still, some Arsenal fans weren’t happy with the deal done, and several felt more needed to be done to help them fight their way back to European positions.

Edu reveals everything to Sky Sports

In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Technical Director Edu Gaspar, in charge of summer planning, sat down with Geoff Shreeves to discuss the window, the plan, and what to expect this season.

Edu was first asked about the strategy and if he could understand external frustrations, to which he replied:

Yes, I understand why, in the first place, they have not seen the team play together still. That’s one of the reasons, but I think we have to look at a larger context than just looking at the money that surrounds it.

“We signed six players under the age of 23, which means a lot in terms of our planning. Normally people like to see just one window so I have to say it’s the bigger picture because we started planning this team a year ago in terms of consolidating the team and trying to build a better foundation.

“Why did we do that? Because we have a reason to try again to build a good base and then one day maybe we’re going to sign just one or two players. But after that, it’s impossible to sign one or two players just because we have so much to do.

“We have to better balance the squad. We have to recruit players with the right characteristics and the right profile to make the squad better, stronger and much more consistent because last season we suffered regularly.

“Now, I want to give Mikel Arteta and the board a much better squad ”.

Edu was also questioned about the need to bring backups like Lokonga, Tavares and Ramsdale, to which he argued:

“We suffered last year because we lost a lot of players and we really didn’t have good substitutes to play.

“I think we need a squad to win games. We need a squad to be in a good position at the end of the season because it’s not just about the first XI.

“Again, we need a base. We need players to play and then we need players to cover the first XI.

Now let’s put it in context. For example, in midfield, you have Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey. So for me and Mikel it doesn’t make sense to sign another player to be on top of them if they are the ones to play.

“That is why we chose Albert Sambi Lokonga to help them.

“If you go to the front we have Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Bukayo Saka, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli. I want to see them play together.

“At number 10, we saw a gap there because we only have Emile Smith Rowe. We needed a number 10 with the same quality to be there, to help and to play.

“Where we needed to spend a lot, a lot of money, for me and for Mikel, it was in the center-back position because we needed someone to fill that position. David Luiz was leaving and this was the moment when we needed someone to come and immediately impact the team with the right profile of what we believe in the short, medium and long term.

That was Ben White. So we went there and signed Ben White to give the team what it needed. “

Finally, he revealed that ultimately the ball stops with him:

“Speaking of my role, I understand the pressure. I understand the pressure on me, Mikel, the management and the club because the situation we are in now is not acceptable.

“But, Now is the time for all of us to be together and I would like to see people step forward in difficult times and take responsibility.

“I am responsible for what we are doing.”

Will it be a successful summer for the Gunners, or will Edu’s job be at stake next spring?
