Victor Lindelof responds to Raphael Varane’s competition at Man United

Victor Lindelof responds to Raphael Varane's competition at Man United

Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof spoke today about the new competition for places at the club, following the arrival of Raphael Varane.

Red reinforcements

After weeks of painful delays and speculation, French stopper Varane was finally introduced as a United player in the middle of last month.

The cap, after a trophy-laden decade in Spain with Real Madrid, chose to bring his talents to Old Trafford for the next four seasons.

Varane arrived as one of a trio of high-profile reinforcements for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad this summer, joining Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo in Manchester’s red half ahead of a highly anticipated season ahead.

And the 28-year-old subsequently went on to show exactly why those in a position of power at the club pushed so hard for his signing last weekend.

With his Red Devils debut in a Premier League encounter with the Wolves, Varane shone alongside Harry Maguire, looking utterly unflappable as he led his new team to a close 1-0 victory.

‘See it as a positive’

So it goes without saying that the Maguire x Varane partnership appears poised to act as the undisputed first choice to fill the heart of Solskjaer’s bottom line for the foreseeable future.

Where, then, does this leave Victor Lindelof?

The Swede, long established as the first choice, seems likely to be limited to backup duties for the next few seasons, the kind of change that would undoubtedly have a totally negative effect on a player’s morale.

However, in statements to the media on Thursday, Lindelof has assured that this will not be the case.

During an interview with FotbollDirekt, the plug was drawn in his thoughts about the arrival of Varane, and he went on to explain:

“It’s great, I play for one of the biggest clubs in the world and they have very good players.”

“We will have a competitive situation and I only see it as positive that we have a good player in the squad.”
