Manchester United and Manchester City will go head-to-head for Nuno Mendes

Manchester clubs face off for Nuno Mendes

In a dramatic twist, Sporting Lisbon looks set to cash in on their handsome prospect Nuno Mendes on the day of the deadline. The young left-back, still only 19 years old, has already played 47 times for Sporting’s senior team, and was part of the Portuguese team that reached the round of 16 at Euro 2020.

Of course, the Manchester club pair have already clashed last week over the transfer of Cristiano Ronaldo, with the Red Devils finally beating their “noisy neighbors”.

However, this time it appears the Citizens may have the most natural need for a left back, with Benjamin Mendy currently suspended pending a police investigation.

On the other hand, Manchester United already have competent options on the left back, with Luke Shaw as a standout player at Euro 2020 and Alex Telles, who joined the club last summer from FC Porto.

The reported price of € 40 million may also discourage United from making a serious play for Mendes, with significant sums already spent on Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo this summer.

PSG also in the race

Another club believed to be in the running for the highly rated teenager is Paris Saint Germain, who are looking to round out their impressive summer window that included moves for Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos and Achraf Hakimi.

With only Juan Bernat currently available to play on the left back, Mendes would certainly fill a need for the French team. Will they be able to fight against Manchester City for his signature?
