Liverpool confirms Nat Phillips contract extension, Reds plans for Rhys Williams revealed

Phillips signs a new agreement

In the wake of the long-term injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, Liverpool would look to Nat Phillips to help resolve their central defense crisis.

The 24-year-old joined Liverpool from Bolton in 2016, but had only appeared once for his senior team before 2020/21.

However, Phillips would go on to score 20 appearances for the Reds over the course of 2020/21, forming a decent partnership with borrower Ozan Kabak late in the season.

But with Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip back in top form and Liverpool signing Ibrahima Konate, there didn’t seem to be much room for Phillips at Anfield.

This would lead to reports At the beginning of summer Newcastle were interested in the cap and Liverpool wanted £ 15 million for him.

Now, however, Liverpool has confirmed that Phillips has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

After singing his deal, what reportedly runs until 2025, Phillips set:

“Obviously, after last year, it is very good to receive that reward from the club. I am happy to stay and be available if the club needs to call me back.

“I’m excited for the next chapter and just to see what it brings.

“It is good that the club has shown me that recognition and I hope I can contribute more of the same with any opportunity that comes my way.”

Williams to Swansea

Now that Phillips looks set to stay, Liverpool have a mountain of solid central defense options this season, even as Joel Matip leaves later this season for the African Cup of Nations.

And now, according to the Echo of LiverpoolPhillips signing a new contract means the Reds are now ready to give the green light to their central colleague Rhys Williams to spend the remainder of the season on loan at Swansea.
