Thomas Tuchel reveals why Ben Chilwell hasn’t played for Chelsea this season

Thomas Tuchel reveals why Ben Chilwell hasn't played for Chelsea this season

Chilwell’s season at Chelsea

Ben Chilwell would end 2020/21 as Chelsea’s main left-back under Thomas Tuchel.

The defender lost his place a bit when Tuchel first arrived, but he quickly became the German’s man of reference, especially in big matches.

Chilwell would start in every Chelsea Champions League matchup from the quarterfinals onwards as the Blues got their 2North Dakota-Never CL trophy.

Therefore, it is likely that many expected to see Chilwell maintain his starting position in 2021/22.

However, that has not been the case so far. In fact, Chilwell hasn’t come off the bench in any of Chelsea’s four games so far this season.

Instead, Marcos Alonso has been Tuchel’s reference man so far this season. And, to the Spaniard’s credit, it looks pretty impressive.

Now, however, Tuchel has moved to explain why Chilwell has yet to show up for Chelsea in 2021/22.

In doing so, the German pointed out that Alonso already had five weeks of preseason on his legs when Chilwell returned from the Euro so the Spaniard was much more prepared than Chilwell.

Tuchel also pointed to the fact that Chelsea now only have three substitutes to use this season, which seems to suggest that we might have seen more of Chilwell if there were still five allowed:

“For Ben Chilwell, it’s very easy. He returned with the last group [after the Euros and holiday].

“When Marcos Alonso arrived he had five weeks in the preseason legs. He played the first competitive games after a fantastic preseason. He was just a lot more physically prepared, which was natural due to the training session and his fantastic games.

“He played in the Super Cup final and three Premier League games. Also, we only have three substitutions allowed and this is a big problem.

“Chilly needed his time in training to adjust to the intensity. Now it is ready, but it was not the time to push it into the cold water.

“It’s a bit sad because you have more tactical opportunities if you have five changes. I don’t understand the small teams’ arguments that they have a disadvantage in this case. I was also the coach of a small team and I would have loved to have five players available.

“I would have made them run 16 kilometers against the best teams. I think it is a big disadvantage in general in Europe, but why am I complaining? “
