Thomas Tuchel provides insight into Chelsea’s plans for Callum Hudson-Odoi

Thomas Tuchel provides insight into Chelsea's plans for Callum Hudson-Odoi

The Hudson-Odoi competition

Callum Hudson-Odoi started out as a fairly popular figure under Thomas Tuchel, and was cast in a somewhat odd role as a right-back in a back-five.

However, Hudson-Odoi began to perform less and less, with Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta taking their places at the rear towards the end of 2020/21.

CHO also has a great deal of quality competition when competing for a spot in the Blues’ top three spots.

With Romelu Lukaku now Chelsea’s main No. 9, all of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi appear to be competing for only two or three spots, depending on whether Lukaku is injured / needs a break. .

Tuchel at Hudson-Odoi

So given his lack of minutes at the end of last season and the fact that he didn’t appear in either of Chelsea’s first two games of this PL campaign, some perhaps expected Hudson-Odoi to move on this summer.

A loan swap for the 20-year-old would apparently make some sense, as it’s hard to see him being more than a supporting player for Tuchel this year.

However, when speaking of the Hudson-Odoi ahead of Liverpool, the German confirmed that there are currently no plans to give in to the extreme:

“At the moment, there is no loan and no thought is considered.

“There is always room for improvement here in training and within this club. But, like I said, it’s hard to argue with this opinion that you need regular playing time to improve your personal level. At the same time, it’s not just about letting the players go.

“Today we only need Christian Pulisic and Kurt Zouma, for example, and we are [on] just 17 regular players from last season. So if we want to compete in all competitions, it’s also about numbers in a team.

“You need a squad of 20, 21 players to compensate for injuries, to compensate for yellow cards or whatever. I have a feeling Callum decided to fight for his place here.

“He had a very good preseason, but of course we are very aware that he fights for offensive positions more than perhaps for winger positions.

“Of course if you do the math you end up with a lot of guys for, right now, three offensive positions.

“So it’s a big challenge for him, but the door is always open to sneak out and make his way. It can happen at any time for offensive players. At the moment, there is no loan and no thought is considered. “
