Richarlison points to ‘unnecessary’ penalty shootout drama against Brighton

Richarlison points to 'unnecessary' penalty shootout drama against Brighton

Spectators of Everton’s latest outing took to social media in numbers on Saturday to target star attacker Richarlison.

Blues in control

Of course, Rafael Benítez’s men are currently locked in Premier League action.

After their campaign got off to a completely positive start, the Toffees made the trip to the South Coast, for a showdown with Graham Potter’s Brighton & Hove Albion.

Everton headed into proceedings hoping to score seven of the nine available to open the 2021/22 season.

And, as things stand on Saturday, this is precisely what they are headed for.

The visitors currently lead Brighton by two goals to nil, courtesy of goals from summer signing in the form Demarai Gray, and leading man Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

‘Nonsense’

However, up to this point in the action at Amex, it is not Everton’s pair of goals that have made the headlines.

Instead, this has come in the form of an incident in preparation for DCL to find the back of the net.

After Seamus Coleman earned the visitors a penalty, Richarlison quickly grabbed the ball, under the obvious assumption that he was ready to take responsibility from 12 yards.

Calvert-Lewin, however, has established himself as the Toffees’ first-choice penalty taker under Benitez, confidently escaping against Leeds last week.

In turn, a somewhat embarrassing scene followed, in which Richarlison was finally forced to give up the ball, before being pulled out of the penalty area:

And viewers of the clash were evidently unimpressed by the behavior of Everton’s Brazilian wide-open man, with just some of the social media reactions to the incident shown below:
