Manchester United’s need for midfield reinforcements becomes clear when McTominay undergoes surgery

Manchester United's need for midfield reinforcements becomes clear when McTominay undergoes surgery

Manchester United need a midfielder

During Manchester United’s 1-1 draw at Southampton on Sunday, the lack of options in central midfield became apparent. Scott McTominay was only fit enough for a spot among the substitutes, leaving Nemanja Matic to start the match.

In the end, it became clear that the Red Devils were missing in the central zones.

However, despite this, Solskjaer has suggested that his business may be finished by this summer, saying:

“I don’t think much is going to happen. If something happens, it is a bonus. You never know what happens in the world of football. But we have had a very good window. I am happy with what we have done ”.

McTominay to have surgery

However, this stance may change in the final days of the transfer window, with the news that Scott McTominay will be sidelined with a groin injury that will require surgery.

Speaking on the clubs’ website, United revealed that:

“Scott underwent surgery for a groin injury that caused significant pain while playing,”

“After having tried all the other treatment options in the preseason, surgery was deemed necessary to resolve the problem.

“We hope to have him back soon.”

This leaves Solskjaer with only Fred, Matic and Donny Van de Beek as options in midfield, with Paul Pogba seemingly finding form on the left side. With Matic aging, and Van De Beek clearly not favored by the manager, could they be persuaded to return to the market to reinforce their position of need?
