Chelsea star Jorginho joins Cristiano Ronaldo at exclusive club

An extraordinary year for Chelsea and Italian star Jorginho continued on Thursday, after the midfielder recorded his name in the history books of European football.

Clean sweep

The last six months, of course, have proven to be the most productive of Jorginho’s career.

After establishing himself as a vastly improved and crucially reliable figure at Chelsea’s midfield base, the former Napoli player proved to be a key cog in new boss Thomas Tuchel’s engine during the second half of last season.

Such efforts ultimately culminated in the Blues achieving a top 4 spot in the Premier League and reaching the final in the Champions League for the second time in their history.

However, after Jorginho’s triumph on the greatest stage in club football, just a few weeks later, there was more glory.

This came at an international level, as the 29-year-old again ran the show from his position in the middle of the field, this time for Italy at Euro 2020.

Roberto Mancini’s men defied all odds by defeating players like Belgium and Spain, before defeating hosts England via a penalty shootout victory, to lift the European Championship trophy.

Jorginho, meanwhile, secured a well deserved spot in the Team of the Tournament engine room.

CR7 paired

And, as described above, on Thursday, the Azzurri star has only continued to add to her silverware collection.

Prior to the 2021/22 Champions League group stage draw, a series of individual prizes were awarded, rewarding the best players from across the continent over the past 12 months.

And Jorginho emerged with the most prestigious of the night, securing himself the 2020/21 UEFA Player of the Year award:

Not only that, but Chelsea’s midfield metronome has, as a result, engraved his name in the history books of European football.

Surprisingly, Jorginho has joined Cristiano Ronaldo as one of only two players to clinch the Champions League title, the European Championship title and the UEFA Player of the Year award in the same calendar year:
