Revealed the reason why Paulo Fonseca rejected Tottenham’s position

Tottenham’s managerial struggle

Paulo Fonseca was, at one point, considered the favorite nailed for Tottenham’s position. Following the departure of temporary manager Ryan Mason at the end of the season, there was a scramble to appoint a new manager, the details of which were released publicly.

First, a move by Mauricio Pochettinno didn’t pay off, before former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte also turned down the opportunity.

They were also thought to have reached out to Julian Nagelsmann and Eric Ten-Haag, as well as former Roma coach Paulo Fonseca.

It all ended in disappointment for the lilywhites when they finally announced that former Wolves man Nuno Espirito Santo would take the reins for the 2021-22 season.

Why Fonseca withdrew

At one point it was thought that Paulo Fonseca was willing to step into the void left by José Mourinho, but he apparently fell apart despite a verbal agreement between the two parties.

Speaking exclusively to SIC In Portugal, Fonseca highlighted how the movement failed, saying:

“All the details were settled, I was really prepared for a new adventure at Tottenham but, with the entrance of the general manager (Paratici), we had some disagreements that were difficult to overcome.

“I really want to coach the best teams, but I can’t compromise my ideas, I can’t compromise my values just to coach a great team. The truth is that the president (Levy) and the sporting director (Hitchen) always argued that the team should be offensive, it should be attractive, it should be a dominant team that went in the direction of what my teams are, in essence.

“And with the entry of the new CEO, things changed a bit. They wanted to go in another direction and, obviously, it was not possible to develop something in which I did not believe ”.

Judging from Fonseca’s words, it could well be another uninspiring football season at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season. However, if he brings in trophies, Spurs fans are unlikely to care too much.
