Matheus Cunha available? Arsenal among the three clubs that should be interested

Arsenal among the three Premier League clubs that should target Matheus Cunha

After a summer that saw him play a key role in Brazil’s gold medal triumph at the Tokyo Olympics, Matheus Cunha is on top of the world and in search of greener pastures.

In a report from a German publication KickerHertha Berlin’s sporting director Arne Friedrich did not rule out the club accepting an offer for the Brazilian under-23 star, although no such offer has yet been submitted.

“We have nothing to say that we have to make decisions now. Of course, Matheus is a player who arouses desire. I can’t say how things will go in the next week and a half. Sometimes football is fast. Sometimes an offer comes in, you have to react. “

But with the transfer window fast approaching its conclusion and a handful of Premier League clubs still potentially in the market for a striker, here are five clubs that could look to a deal for Cunha to tick a box on their list of goals for summer.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has tied a bag full of business this summer on both sides of the revolving door game, and that includes both. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre lacazette linked with being on the table.

Both forwards, in their day, make a difference but lack tactical balance. A striker with a better combination could certainly fit into what Arteta is perceived to want to achieve at Emirates Stadium, and Cunha fits that mold quite well.

Capable of scoring chances, it’s Cunha’s ability when he’s on the ball that makes him a threat to do something that both Aubameyang and Lacazette have struggled to do in North London; create your own opportunities. Such has been their confidence in the creativity behind them that it often costs Arsenal dearly. Cunha, with its straightforward qualities, could be a hidden deal for a lower fee (value per Transfermarkt is £ 26 million) with high potential earnings.

With Arsenal regularly linked to interest in signing a forward this summer, Cunha would present a smart business similar to the club’s long-term approach this summer.

Brighton

There is not a single person with an affinity for Premier League football who is unfamiliar with Brighton’s struggles to find the back of the net consistently under coach Graham Potter.

A solid tactician and capable of deploying his team in such a way as to result in strong opportunity creation, the way the Seagulls underperformed their xG during the 2020-21 Premier League campaign (13.82 goals under his data projections) was one of the key reasons why Brighton finished 16th rather than the top half of the table.

Cunha would certainly offer a more effective forward in the preferred three-forward system Potter uses in his 3-4-1-2 at Amex Community Stadium, and his ability to play second forward could offer even more tactical solutions. If the search for Benfica’s Darwin Núñez club doesn’t materialize, Cunha should be on the list.

West Ham United

With four goals in their first outing in 2021-22 against Newcastle and the sixth best goal record last season, West Ham United are barely struggling to score goals with David Moyes at London Stadium.

But despite his excess of goals to start the current campaign and his solid performances last season, the reality is that West Ham has only one striker to call in the line of English international Michail Antonio. The 31-year-old has proven to be a valuable asset to the Hammers, but his poor injury record puts West Ham at risk of going through the Premier League without a recognized leader.

Linked with potential moves for players like Liverpool’s Divock Origi, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Alassane Pléa and Barcelona’s Martin Braithwaite, Cunha could provide an affordable option (without the surcharge that could strike a deal for Origi) while giving him a Moyes a tactically flexible option that could still appear on your preferred XI, either behind Antonio or on either flank, depending on your available options.
