The new Romero fights while the Spurs fall to Pacos de Ferreira

New kid Cristian Romero receives criticism when Spurs fall in first loss with Nuno

Since then, Tottenham Hotspur’s surprise defeat at the hands of Pacos de Ferreira has made the arrival of summer, Cristian Romero, the subject of strong criticism online.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men returned to action recently.

Spurs traveled to Porto to meet Primeira Liga’s Pacos de Ferreira in the qualifying rounds for the opening of the Europa Conference League.

Without a doubt, the Lilywhites started the process with their tails held high, after a surprising season-opening victory over Manchester City.

Yet when all was said and done Thursday night, Nuno and company. they were thrown back to earth with a thud.

A completely disappointing display, during which the visitors failed to get a single shot on goal, finally saw Pacos emerge on the right side from a final score of 1-0.

The lone goal of the game came to the edge of the break, when a pass from Nuno Santos that split the defense sent Lucas Silva clear to fit confidently at the near post:

Tottenham, in turn, has it all to do when the two teams meet in the second leg in North London.

The truth, however, is that the Lilywhites’ defeat tonight came almost entirely as a result of their new boss turning over.

Nuno opted to completely overhaul his starting eleven to face Pacos, leaving the vast majority of his first-team team at home, while giving opportunities to players like Ryan Sessegnon, Matt Doherty and the young Dane Scarlett.

Meanwhile, the three summer reinforcements of the club also entered from the beginning, in the form of Pierluigi Gollini, Bryan Gil and Cristian Romero.

Widespread excitement has of course surrounded the arrival of the latter, fresh off a stellar season in Italy with Atalanta, and a Copa América triumph with Argentina.

To say that Romero’s debut with his new club was disappointing, however, would be an understatement.

The 23-year-old, evidently still a bit off the mark of the game, endured a torrid night in the heart of the Spurs backline, struggling to deal with the threat Pacos posed at all times.
