Despite wanting to stay, Lucas Torreira is not in the plans of Arsenal de Arteta

A new vision of the future of Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira will be unveiled on Thursday night.

Atleti fights

Uruguayan international Torreira was, of course, one of the players who were sanctioned upon leaving North London last summer.

The former Sampdoria player, two years after his arrival at Emirates, moved to La Liga, to align himself with Atlético de Madrid for the 2020/21 campaign.

However, to say that Torreira’s time in the Spanish capital subsequently proved disappointing would be an understatement.

After a positive start to life as an rojiblanco, the 25-year-old was finally used as little more than a substitute for Diego Simeone, in an attempt to watch games from winning positions.

In all, Torreira made 19 La Liga appearances, and only three came in the form of starts.

In turn, it was not a surprise when Atlético chose not to try to make the arrival of the South American permanent after the opening of the summer transfer window.

Rome bound?

Torreira, meanwhile, was left with little time to deal with the affairs of the Spanish capital, after getting a call for Uruguay to be called up for the Copa América.

The action midfielder was part of Celeste’s squad that advanced beyond the group stage, only to eventually be sent to the quarter-finals by Colombia.

Uruguay’s exit from the Cup, however, came on July 3.

Why, then, has Torreira not yet re-linked with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal team?

Well, an idea of precisely that has been presented tonight.

The information comes courtesy of football.london’s trustworthy Chris Wheatley, who has confirmed that Torreira was, in fact, in favor of returning to base with Arsenal heading into the new season.

His boss, however, later made it clear that the midfielder is not in his plans to move forward.

Therefore, a return to Serie A seems the most likely outcome as things stand, and it is understood that the capital’s rivals AS Roma and Lazio are interested in signing Torreira.

It is added that the 25-year-old “respects the decision made” by Arteta, as his agent has since confirmed that Torreira is very open to returning to Italy.
