Top picks of captains for GW1

A key part of playing Fantasy Premier League is choosing your captain for each week of play.

The player who selects from his starting eleven as his captain will see his point total doubled from that round of matches. And if you’re not involved in any way, your vice-captain for the week will have his normal point total doubled.

Such an increase in points can often make or break your playing week and see you move up or down the FPL ranks a bit.

Therefore, choosing the best captain each week is a decision that you need to think a lot about. And in 101, we are here to help, choosing the top three captains options each week.

Here are our picks for Gameweek 2.

Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United (12.1)

Different season, the same Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United kicked off their 2021/22 campaign in style last week with a 5-1 beating over bitter rivals Leeds United.

And once again, Bruno Fernandes would be the protagonist of The Red Devils.

The Portuguese looked as strong as ever, bonding well with Paul Pogba to score his first hat-trick for Man United, and neither of them was even a penalty!

Manchester United now face Southampton in the second week of the game, and another shot from Fernandes is desperately awaited.

The Saints were a highly disorganized team in their opening weekend loss to Everton, especially without the services of point man Jannick Vestergaard, who has now joined Leicester City.

It’s also worth noting that Southampton had the highest number of expected goals against (2.39) of the 20 PL teams last weekend.

Yes, a small sample, but it suggests that Manchester United should be able to dominate them this weekend, which of course bodes well for Fernandes.

Mohamed Salah, Liverpool (12.5 million)

Like Fernandes, Mohamed Salah was a must have for the first weekend of the season and, once again, it looks like he will also be a key figure in this week of play.

The Egyptian was an integral part of Liverpool’s opening weekend win over Norwich, scoring one goal and two assists.

He also created the largest joint chances of any PL player in GW1 and was the second set for the most shots in an opponent’s area, highlighting his threat when it comes to scoring and creating goals.

Liverpool also play at home to Burnley this week. The Clarets have a lousy record against the top six teams and have beaten Liverpool only once since 2016.

Sean Dyche’s side also did not cover himself in glory in his first outing of the season.

Despite playing against Brighton alone, they conceded 12 shots in their own area; only newly promoted Norwich and Brentford conceded more (both 13).

Riyad Mahrez, Manchester City 9.0m)

Like GW1, although Salah or Fernandes are probably your best options, there is another potentially decent shout out for the captain in GW2.

That man is Riyad Mahrez, who should be a starter for Manchester City at home to Norwich.

City lost their first outing of the seaosn vs Tottenham, but they had a bit of bad luck not finding the net once.

They had an xG of 2.11 vs Spurs, which was 3rd higher in PL last week. They would also create 13 chances, which was set-3.rd Highest in the league in GW1.

So when facing a Norwich team that, as mentioned above, conceded the most joint shots in their area last week, it’s hard to see Man City not score at least a couple of goals at the Etihad.
