Liverpool dealt a ‘big blow’ in the pursuit of Renato Sanches from Lille

Liverpool dealt a 'big blow' in the pursuit of Renato Sanches from Lille

Liverpool linked to Renato Sanches

After Georginio Wijnaldum left Liverpool on a free transfer this summer, it wasn’t too surprising to see the Reds linked with some midfielders this summer.

A linked name has been that of Renato Sanches de Lille, with reports earlier this summer, suggesting that Liverpool were very interested in him.

Sanches would play 29 times for Lille last season, as they won a historic Ligue 1 title, ending PSG’s reign of dominance over French football.

The midfielder participated in all four of Portugal’s Euro 2020 qualifiers during the summer.

Sanches is likely to stay in Lille

However, the news that has emerged recently has put an end to the possibility that Liverpool, or any other club, will sign Sanches this summer.

As explained by Mirror:

Liverpool have taken a major blow in their search for Portuguese star Renato Sanches, after Lille confirmed the midfielder would be out for six weeks.

The French club took to their official Twitter account to post the news, and Sanches is said to have undergone surgery on Monday:

Renato Sanches underwent successful surgery Monday for a meniscal injury to his right knee. Our midfielder is doing well.

Renato will be able to start his skincare program this week. The duration of your unavailability, estimated at 6 weeks, will be defined more precisely in the coming weeks. Good recovery Renato!

Won’t there be a 100% deal this summer? It has not been confirmed by any reliable source. But with Sanches expected to come out well past the transfer deadline later this month, it seems very, very unlikely.
