The true cost of returning fans revealed with sick chants and abuse

The fans came back

For the first time since March 2020, Premier League stadiums were at full capacity for the opening day of the new Premier League season. While the atmosphere, in most cases, made the experience unforgettable, there were also stark reminders why so many tend to avoid fans and stadiums on match days.

Leeds and Manchester United fans fighting in the street

One of the biggest rivalries in club football came on Saturday, when Manchester United hosted Leeds United at Old Trafford.

The atmosphere was expected to be charged, and videos appeared on social media of a fight in the center of Manchester City between the two groups of fans, with containers, chairs and other projectiles thrown.

“Disappoint your country”

Meanwhile, Leeds United fans began abusing two Manchester United players in particular, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho, who both missed crucial penalties in the final shootout of Euro 2020.

Leeds fans mock Munich air disaster

Perhaps the most disgusting thing is that Leeds United fans singing about the Munich air disaster, a 1958 accident in which 8 Manchester United players and three staff members were killed.

The traveling fans are believed to have been triggered by the appearance of a Turkey flag, which was thrown on their fans by Manchester United fans. This was in reference to his own tragedy, in which two Leeds United fans were killed prior to a UEFA Cup tie against Galatasary in 2000.

Liverpool condemns Gilmour abuse

Liverpool also took to social media to condemn the abuses against Norwich midfielder Billy Gilmour during their 3-0 win at Carrow Road. Gilmour, on loan from Chelsea, was subjected to audible chants of “Chelsea rent boy” for much of the 90 minutes.
