Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard talks about his mental health issues that led him to ‘turn to drinking’

Manchester United's Jesse Lingard talks about his mental health issues that led him to 'turn to drinking'

The rebirth of Lingard’s career

Jesse Lingard enjoyed a rebirth of his career in the second half of 2020/21.

The 28-year-old primarily fought for any sort of regular action with Manchester United during the first half of the 2020/21 campaign.

He made just three appearances for the Red Devils, all of which came in cup competitions.

As a result, it was not a huge surprise when United allowed Lingard to leave Old Trafford on loan during the winter window.

What was surprising, however, was how impressive the midfielder looked for West Ham.

In 16 league outings for David Moyes’ team, Lingard scored nine goals and five assists, playing a key role for the Hammers to secure a place in the Europa League for the 2021/22 season.

Lingard’s mental health struggles

However, prior to its resurgence in West Ham, Lingard seems to have been in a rather dark place.

The midfielder, as briefly mentioned, became a secondary player at United during 2019/20 and in the first half of the 2020/21 campaign.

And this seems to have really affected the mental health of the 28-year-old.

Speaking in a recent interview, Lingard revealed that because he wasn’t playing games he was depressed, his confidence soared, and during bad periods, he drank again:

“We had times during the bad periods where I started to turn to drinking at night and that was not me.

“My dad has never been a heavy drinker. My mother has never been a heavy drinker. I was holding back so much in my head that I had turned to drink to try to ease the pain.

“[Lingard’s brother] Louie would look at me and think, ‘That’s not my brother.’ I’ve never been a heavy drinker, but I resorted to that for my own peace. When I finally opened up and started talking to the family, it really helped. I owe it to them.

“My confidence skyrocketed. You can be that carefree guy, bouncing around the training ground, but deep down you’re wearing that smile as a mask.

“I wasn’t playing so I was depressed. Fortunately, Louie sent me videos from my Under 21 days with United and England. He was trying to make me realize what a good player he had been.

“‘See this! See this!’ So I did it and I was like, ‘You know what? I can’t throw this away.’ It gave me confidence and that first block gave me a chance to reevaluate what I wanted in life. “
