Heung-min Son continues to be in good shape scoring goals against Manchester City to give Tottenham victory in the opening weekend

Not Kane? No problem: Heung-min Son continues in good scoring form against Man City to give Tottenham victory in the opening weekend

Tottenham vs Man City

The last Premier League match of the weekend is currently played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham will host Manchester City in what is Nuno Espirito Santo’s first league game in charge.

However, the Spurs will try to do it without the services of Harry Kane, who has been left out of the team of the day for reasons of physical condition.

Meanwhile, Man City is looking to get off to a great start in defending the title and has given Jack Grealish his first competitive start for the club since moving from Aston Villa.

Man City would start the tie with the front foot, with key opportunities for Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan and Riyad Mahrez in the opening exchanges.

However, despite their dominance, City couldn’t find a starter, allowing the Spurs to slowly grow in the game and put together a handful of fast break opportunities.

Most, however, ended when Heung-min Son failed to pick a pass or blew an opportunity with a bad shot.

The South Korean looked pretty lost without Harry Kane in the first 45, with the English presence usually creating the half spaces for Son to run and explode or watch him get into great positions to finish off Son’s passes.

But in the end, the halftime whistle sounded with the score still 0-0 and Man City was probably a bit frustrated at not taking the lead after such a positive start.

Who Needs Kane?

Son, however, finally found his shooting boots in the 45th second and it would be the striker who broke the standoff in North London.

Steven Bergwijn broke into another counterattack, finding Son, who this time opted to cut inside, beating Nathan Ake to smash an impressive effort over Ederson from the edge of the area:

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Son has now scored seven goals against Guardiola’s Man City, only Jamie Vardy has found the net more often against the Sky Blues with the Spaniard:

Son has also surpassed Manchester United legend Eric Cantona on the Premier League scorers table with his goal on Sunday:

In response to going 1-0 down, Man City brought in Gabriel Jesus with around 20 minutes to go. Kevin De Bruyne and Oleksandr Zinchenko were introduced with 12 minutes of normal time remaining for Mahrez and Benjamin Mendy, the latter of whom had a rather mediocre defensive performance against the Lilywhites.

However, these changes did not make a difference, and Son’s goal in the 55th minute would be enough for Kaneless-Tottenham to achieve a great victory over the champions.

And while it wasn’t a perfect display for Spurs, especially at the start, the Tottenham faithful should be confident in the fact that they were able to beat a fairly strong Man City team without Kane’s services.

Can Heung-min Son completely replace Kane if he decides to move on? Probably not.

But no player the Spurs can realistically afford could do it. And at the moment, it seems that Son is his best option to potentially take on the mantle of English. He is an excellent finisher and a decent creator, but not on the same level as Kane, although there are very few players in the world at the moment.
