Michail Antonio joins Paolo Di Canio in West Ham history books with strike vs Newcastle

West Ham United hitman Michail Antonio recorded his name indelibly in the club’s history books this afternoon after finding the net against Newcastle United.

David Moyes’s men, of course, were back in action not long ago. The Hammers made the trip to St. James’ Park, for their first Premier League game of the season.

West Ham, fresh off a season defying the odds last time out, headed into proceedings with an eye no doubt firmly fixed on all three.

And, when all was said and done on Tyneside, this is precisely what the visitors sought to ensure.

A wonderful 90 minutes of end-to-end soccer, following Sunday’s full-time whistle, culminated in a 4-2 win for West Ham.

Despite being left behind twice, goals from all of Aaron Cresswell, Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michail Antonio finally proved enough to guide Moyes’s team to a winning start to the campaign and an early spot in the top. -4 of the Premier League.

While Sunday as such turned out to be a good day for West Ham fans, it also marked a particularly special one for one member of the Irons team in particular.

The player in question? Michail Antonio.

Antonio completed the visiting team’s scoring feats this afternoon, crashing into the far corner after being released from the right side of the area by the superb Said Benrahma.

And, as statistician OptaJoe revealed, his latest effort means the Hammers’ attacking spearhead now stands as the Premier League’s top scorer in club history, alongside Paolo Di Canio.
