Top picks of captains for GW1
A key part of playing Fantasy Premier League is choosing your captain for each week of play.
The player who selects from his starting eleven as his captain will see his point total doubled from that round of matches. And if you’re not involved in any way, your vice-captain for the week will have his normal point total doubled.
Such an increase in points can often make or break your playing week and see you move up or down the FPL ranks a bit.
Therefore, choosing the best captain each week is a decision that you need to think a lot about. And in 101, we are here to help, choosing the top three captains options each week.
Here are our picks for gameweek1.
Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United (12.0 million)
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re probably aware of what one of FPL’s main assets is, Bruno Fernandes.
The Portuguese finished 2020/21 as the highest-scoring player in the FPL after receiving 18 goals and 14 assists.
Fernandes then had a disappointing Euro 2020, but you shouldn’t let that stop you as he has never been able to replicate his Manchester United / Sporting figures for his country.
And while there was talk United’s potentially changing formation to use two No. 8s this season, a change that could limit Fernandes’ returns slightly, they do not appear ready to do so in their first bout of the season as they maintained their traditional 4-2-3. -1 vs Everton over the weekend with Fernandes as No. 10.
It is also worth noting that Fernandes was one of their most astute players during that match and scored a magnificent free kick.
As for Man United’s opponents this week, they face Leeds United. And while Marcelo Bielsa and company. improved defensively in the second half of 2020/21, it’s hard to see them keeping a clean sheet at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Mohamed Salah, Liverpool (12.5 million)
Like Bruno Fernandes, having Mohamed Salah on your side for the first few weeks of play should be a no-brainer.
The Egyptian was the 3rd-FPL’s best asset last season, even with Liverpool having a pretty terrible season overall.
And now that players like Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are back in top form, we should continue to see Salah dominate the Premier League again.
He would score 22 and assist six in the league last season and with a clash against newly promoted Norwich this week, he’s almost nailed to score.
Of course, Norwich seems to have improved a bit defensively since their last season in the top flight, but it is still very difficult to see that they can hold Liverpool at bay this weekend.
Also, not that they should have too much influence on their next encounter, but Norwich have not beaten Liverpool in any competition since 1994, racking up two draws and 12 losses since then, two of which came in 2019/20 and saw Liverpool win. 5. -1 in both games.
Danny Ings, Aston Villa (8.0 m)
Honestly, not going with Salah or Bruno for their pick of captain in GW1 is a bit risky.
However, if you don’t have the pair or are in the mood for a wild card option, Danny Ings could be your man.
Ings arrived from Southampton last week but had his first start and scored his first goal in Villa’s last preseason match over the weekend.
When fit, Ings is one of England’s deadliest forwards. So when Villa faces newly promoted Watford on the weekend, chances are high that he will be on the roster.
